Roy: Boot camp, I can assure you, was as new and different a world for boys raised in the city as for their country cousins. The only thing I can think of that might have made it any less alien was the sort of experience Tom Bowerman had in the Civilian Conservation Corps. It toughened him, as I read his memoir, and prepared him to cope with difficult times in the Armed Guard.
