I can say that within a very few hours after arriving at Great Lakes Naval Traing Station, in August 1943, that that I thought I had somehow been transported to a foreign land.
Somehow, along with the rest of Boot Company No. 1276, I finally "made it"!!
Boot Camp was a struggle for me, and I believe, for many others. I was "raised" in a Hoosier town of 500 people and it barely was out of the 1800's mindset. I had never been out in the big world much and never had an inside toilet nor any heating system other than a coal stove in the living room and a kindling/corncob fired range in our kitchen.
The "modern" world took some getting used to by this small town kid!!
I could "talk" all day about it...
