Like virtually everything related to the Navy, ship designations change. Just after the war, when I served as a radioman with the flag allowance of CoMinPac (commander mine forces Pacific) AMS was the designation for auxiliary mine sweeper (some had wooden hulls, others steel) and they were deployed in any waters, wherever needed; YMS stood for yard mine sweeper, which was somewhat smaller. There was also the DMS, or destroyer mine sweeper, obviously converted. Incidentally, another converted destroyer was the APD, or high-speed transport.
