It is funny that some of the ship designations are for mine sweepers. Dad mentioned being on some wooden mine sweepers one time.
He was getting close to 20 years (18-19)and a full pension. It was the late 1950's-very early 1960's. He said there was not much of a call for Gunners Mates during peace time and the Navy was pushing to get him out just before eligibility for a pension. Luckily Dad had very good commanding officers that he reported to directly. They made him a carpenter on a wooden mine sweeper and a librarian at the Fort Schuyler Navy Reserve Training Center to get him his 20 year pension benefits.
