Nice to hear from all of you.
I checked all of Dad's records that I have but I did not find details of his time at boot camo Great Lakes. Just a list of dad's time in the Navy.
He enlisted 1-28-1943 Charlotte NC. Arived at Great Lakes 1-30-1943. Looks like he was there for about 12 weeks for General Seamanship and Basic Gunnery school. Then to Little Creek, VA for advanced Gunnery School. Then to Brooklyn Armed Guard Center and assigned to the SS Richard H. Alvey for the Murmask Run. Also the SS Milford Victory.
After the war Dad left the Navy for a brief time to be a civilian in charge of the Ships Store at the Broklyn AGC in 1946. Later that year he reentered the Navy for 20 years.
The next 20 years he was on DE's, LST's. Also on YMS 45, AMS 41, PCE 904. Not sure what those ship designations mean, if anybody knows?
Raising a family in Brooklyn, Dad was fortunate to be stationed out of Brooklyn AGC, Jersey City, and mostly Fort Schuyler-Bronx his entire Navy career.
After Navy retirement dad worked in the Navy Uniform Shop- 29 St Brooklyn. When they closed the Brooklyn warehouse Dad moved the Uniform Shop to little Creek. Back where he started 40 years before. Retiring 13 years later after 53 total years with the Navy in some capacity.
Dear Ron, I know about dad's (Robert Braswell) movements but was wondering if you would know any details such as shipmates from the Richard H Alvey.
PS- It has only been one week so no communication from my son yet. I was told to expect something about week 2 or 3.
