Richard V was my great grandfather. I've been told she was torpedoed and also sunk in typhoon, but federal documentation says differently.
My contact found that she grounded off of Okinawa. No loss of life. Crew had to abandon her and eventually the hull wreck was removed and sold for scrap. :-(
Kind of a downer, but that is the description I received from a reliable source.
