Your uncles last name sure rings a loud bell. I'm almost positive I've heard my father mention someone with the last name Epperley when talking about his Navy days.
Please ask your uncle if he remembers a Johnny Swindell. The ships he served on were the SS Samuel McIntyre, SS Bardstown Victory, and SS Ocala Victory. If he's the same Epperley, the names may jog his memory.
