Although there were instances of merchant crews contributing to a sort of bonus for Armed Guard personnel, to compensate for the difference in pay, this was not a common practice and there was a reason for that being so. I find, on reading the general instructions to Armed Guard commanders (thoughtfully provided by Rick Pitz), that such gestures were specifically prohibited. The relative language is:
"The acceptance of such gratuities by Naval
personnel under any circumstances is considered to be contrary to the customs and traditions of the Naval service. . . . Hereafter, if any such gratuity is received by a member of the Naval service, it is directed that the gratuity be returned to the donor with a statement that its acceptance is not permitted under existing Navy regulations."
I never had the opportunity to reject any such gesture of generosity but, being ignorant of the rule, would more than likely have kept it.
