I served aboard two Liberty ships and a small tanker. I was only on the tanker for about two and a half months but found out they don't stay in port only a few hours. Not much liberty time!
On one Liberty ship we carried 5,000 tons of 155mm shells up to Livorno, Italy (not too far from the front at that time). We were under air attacks several times as the Quartermaster troops unloaded our shells. Each time an air raid warning sounded they left the ship and din't return for quite some time after the "all-clear" sounded. (I didn't blame them)!!
ALL ships, and to a great degree merchant ships in particular, were hazardess places to be during wartime.
Each of us had our experiences and stories to relate. Put 'em all together and you would have one heck of a book! (Sorry, I don't have enough time left to do that...but I'd love to)!
God Bless.
