My Father was a messman on the S.S. Russell H. Chittenden. They lost her on a reef in March of 1945. After reading your posting I was wondering if you might have any pictures, stories, whatever of his ship as you were on the same waters. The Chittenden went aground off the coast of New Guinea (sic) and the crew were rescued from an island by HMS Parrett. My Dad will be 81 on the 28th of this month and I am trying to collect as much of his "life" (I would say military, however, MOST of his life WAS in the military) as I can and send it all to him. He wasn't much more than a boy when he signed up, but he sure has shared lots of stories with me, for which I am eternally grateful. I would truly love to find more about his ship and crewmates. I believe the Ship's Captain was named Paul Cable. Any info you might have or contacts would be appreciated.
Although most kids these days have never heard of the Merchant Marines, my Dad's kids have always known... without you guys, we quite possibly would have all been "Sunk". So, I would like to thank ALL of the men who served in the Merchant Marines as well as their families. This Country owes you all a huge debt of gratitude. Thanks for your time and attention.
My Father's name is Freddie Joe Finney, he is from Texas, originally, and would have been BARELY 17 at the time he shipped out.
Sincerely, Cathy Finney McManus
