Lots of men will insist that they were driven by patriotic fervor to enlist, even some who were drafted and dragged kicking and screaming into uniform. Some, including me (I was very young) imagined it would be a great adventure. Your father probably spoke for a majority who saw life in the Navy as an improvement over the hardship of the Great Depression. To answer your question, as best I can, the Navy in the early months of the war took only volunteers but at some point accepted men who had been drafted and given a choice of what branch to go into.
