About 1999 I took a tour of the SS John Brown with Dad. We had a young volunteer tour guide that was very nice but not always accurate describing the ship. I think Dad was the only Armed Guard in our small group and when this nice young man would say something not accurate Dad would shake his head. The young man would ask Dad for a correction. Dad actually had alot of fun explaining the ship.
Now back to the food story. When we were at the main Aft gun (Not sure what type) the nice guide gave his speech. He was right on with the working of the gun. He then asked my Dad if he had anything to add. Dad told him to open the door to some type of locker behind the gun but it was locked or welded shut. Dad said if you open that locker there is a trap door with a ladder all the way to the bottom of the ship. You could follow the bottom of the ship forward to another ladder that brought you up near the galley. Bottom line: Dad was young, skinny, and fast. He said while on watch he could make it from the gun to the galley and steal a can of peaches and make it back without getting caught.
