My dad rarely provided details about the food although he did tell of a time when his ship was caught in a huge storm off the Cape of Good Hope in route to India. On this particular voyage, the ship encountered a severe weather system so large and fierce that the only way they could keep from being destroyed by the storm was to go far out to sea. That was a great move which saved the ship and the men, but it put them weeks from their planned port arrival time and they did not have extra rations. So not only did they have to worry about German u-boats and low fuel, but they also had to worry about rationing food and water. The supplies got very, very low. Well, to make a long story short, they all survived. When they reached port, there were Indians cooking various indigenous foods near the port. They were using dried cow dung for cooking fuel. Many of the sailors were so ravenous that, despite warnings to not eat too much at one time and about the unsanitary conditions, they ate everything in site and became violently ill.
