Fran, I can't remember the date but we went into Oran and picked up several hundred French Senagalese troops. They wre the BIG, TALL, blacks who carried rifles that appeared to be about 18 feet long!!!
We took them to Marseilles, France where they disembarked.
I recall another time we were in Oran and they were having an outbreak of Bubonic plague. We were quarantined and could not go ashore. I think some of us were a bit worried as to whether the rat guards would actually keep those big wharf rats from boarding us and bringing on that terrible plague.
Another time we were in Algiers when we heard a broadcast from "Axis Sally" in that satin-like voice telling us that in honor of Goering's birthday they would be "dropping off" some birthday presents for us that night or the next.
Sure enough the bombers came over and dropped their "gifts" right on schedule! (The Germans appeared to have pretty darned good intelligence about our movements most of the time).
