I'm sure that the AG members on this board can be more helpful, but I'll try to help, too. I'm the daughter of a deceased AG so I'm certainly no expert. If fact, my father also served in the Army a couple of years after his four years with the Navy, but I'm having a hard time finding those records so we're in a similar boat.
First of all, please tell your father how grateful I am for his service to our country.
There is a listing of AG crew members on this site that also has the ships that they served on. Maybe some of the crew members still survive and you could contact them. http://www.armed-guard.com/hhhh.html
You've probably already tried this, but in case you haven't.

Also, here is some information I Googled. Hopefully, the information is still current.

I, like you, heard stories all my life from my father. Regrettably, I don't have those stories taped or written down. While you still have time, I would encourage you, if you haven't already, to get his stories recorded. They are priceless stories, and the voices of his generation will soon be silent. It will then be up to us to assure that no one ever forgets the tremendous sacrifices they made for our country. Good luck in your search, and, again, please convey to your father my sincere gratitude.
