Thanks, Mr. Burnham, for your post. I had no idea how common or uncommon the scrubbing story was. My dad was a fabulous storyteller who could mesmerize anyone who listened to him talk, but I always wondered if he embellished the scrubbing incident for "dramatic effect". Now I know that he didn't.
I always was fascinated by his telling us about his experiences, but, as the article said, he was pretty tight lipped about most things although generous in the stories that he did tell. Regrettably, I was caught up in the busy-ness of life too much to have gotten his experiences in writing or on tape. It's interesting but sad how the man I knew and loved as my father was really almost an enigma. He carried so much of the war in his heart and soul. This web site and responses like yours help me understand my dad more, what he went through, what the life shaping experience being in the AG was.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the article. I'm just so grateful that Mr. Deal found the Armed Guard contribution to the war effort as important as we know it to have been.
