Posted by Melinda Hefner on October 30, 2007, 5:07 am, in reply to "My Dad John Kearney" My father was in the AG, and, like yours, he always said it was no big deal. Regrettably, my sweet father died in 2004 and I just found out a couple of weeks ago that he had been on a ship that had been torpedoed. It was a tanker and the sea was ablaze with fire from all of the fuel. My father and others had to jump into the inferno to save their lives. My father held his breath as long as he could, but, obviously, he eventually had to surface. He was burned on his face and scalp, but when he came home later on leave, he simply told his family that he had gotten a really bad sun burn. I have no idea how or when he and his commrades were rescued. My daddy was 19 years old when he joined the Armed Guard...to me, a mere boy. I, like you, lived with a hero. Please convey to your father, if he is still with us, how grateful I am for his service to our country. I will never forget his sacrfice. He and all the other AG's are heroes to me as well.
