Posted by Eric Ok on the flip side. The 944s are newer except for the 924S. The 944 is much more powerful. The 944/924S has a much smoother engine. It basically comes to this. I suggest you find a real nice 1981-82 2.0L 924. Should be had for around $2000-$2500 with low miles and excellent condition. Then have it properly inspected and put $2K in the bank and if needed you have it. Or you can look for a 1988 924S. That is the most powerful non turbo 924 out there. It has the issues the 944 has but can be had for $3-5K pedending on location and condition. I think $4K is a decent average. Again have it inspected properly. The 944. Can also be had in the $3-5K range but those are the older 1983-85 cars. They are still quite nice but will be facing many of the issues that I noted above due to their age. So the budget could easily be exceeded with just one issue. Clutch can run $1200-$1500 if you have a shop perform the work. Yes the 924 clutch is just about as expensive to replace but can be inspected before purchase for condition and life expectancy. The rubber centered clutches on the 924S/944 can just shatter and you are dead in the water. Oh I have a 1980 and 1982 924 and had a 1983 944 and my friend has a 1989 944S2 so I do speak from experience not just opinion. Eric --Previous Message--

Sure 924 is less expensive to purchase own and maintain. Less worries about engine destroying itself. No leaking power steering pumps or racks, not leaking slave cylinders, no rubber centered clutch failures, no timing or ballance shaft belts failing ... destroying engine. Yes 2.0L 924 belt can fail but you just replace the belt time the car and you are on your way.
