924 turbo propeller shaft

1980 924 turbo that has not run for years
makes a horrible rattle noise when the engine is
running and the clutch is released (with the
transmission in neutral). I suspect a propeller
shaft bearing. Replacing the propeller shaft
and tube looks difficult. Has anyone done this?
