1983 944 Starting problem and bad DME

My 1983 won't start. I took it to a reputable Porsche Mechanic, he tested the DME, says that it is bad and that with a good dme in the car it still cranks without starting,apparently he had an extra. He isn't sure what is wrong, has anyone else had a similar situation? I owe him $200 for diagnostic, and I don't even know what the problem is yet!
