I was pleased to find an Advertising Trade Card for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa Grocers, MA posted on Ancestorville. My grandfather, Frank Edgar Miles, who was born in 1877, in Stanley, York, New Brunswick, Canada came to the US at the age of 17. He went to work for Cobb, Bates & Yerxa in Boston, MA. Henry Detrick Yerxa was the founder of that great grocery firm. Henry D. Yerxa and my grandfather were 1st cousins 2 times removed. This is where my grandfather first learned the grocery business. In about 1902 he moved to Fargo, ND (Cass County) where he worked at the Yerxa Mercantile Store. John Pritchard Yerxa was the proprietor of the retail grocery store. John P. Yerxa was my grandfather’s uncle. Later my grandfather moved to Goldfield, NV where he worked as a clerk in a grocery store (H. W. Miles & Co.). This Henry W. Miles was not a relative. Frank then moved to Orange Co., CA where he owned and operated a grocery store chain. I have a picture of his delivery truck which says “Miles, The Cash Grocer” on the side. It would be interesting to know if there are others who have information on these Miles and Yerxa family members.
