Hi,
Mmany of the North Shore neighbourhoods you mentioned are good family areas (though pricey and in high demand, esp. Lane Cove). We live in Lindfield which is very close to North Ryde. Its a nice leafy family suburb. We chose it for similar considerations- the public shchools in this area are among the best in Sydney and there are also a lot of private schools in the area to choose from. Its also extrememly convenient, being on the North Shore Train Line. Neighbouring suburbs Roseville, Killara and Pymble are also nice.
I would not recommend Crows Nest or Neutral Bay (where we lived pre-kid). They tend to be high-density noisy and crowded neighbourhoods and not very kid-friendly. Those areas are largely dominated by younger singles and prof. couples without kids. (Balmain is a great neighbourhood but the commute to North Ryde would not be fun).
