Posted by Ole on 6/11/2005, 11:02 pm, in reply to "Re: Blue Fronted Amazon Molting" Please forget handling with gloves, towels and punishment with water spraying etc. This only delays the problems and indeed give new problems in lack of trust, afraid for showering etc etc. The info I give here now is well proven and self experienced as well. Punishment have NO effect in parrots at all! Ignore the bad is boring for the bird and the behaviour will gradually die out, by responsing the good the behaviour it's reinforced and will most likely happen again. Parrots love loud screaming, and if you yeall being bitten, well it's fun for him :) Wish you luck --Previous Message--

Being bitten is not uncommon. You must handle the "test-bites" which is just to test you out and is no pain at all. IGNORE is keyword for this. If you do something intereresting for the bird it will bite more often and harder to achiece a particular response. This will worsen biting problems: Screaming, making a face etc. The clue is to ignore the bite, just walk away when the accident occur or put him in the cage. Reastablish contact again after around 30 min, focus and praise the positive. BUT if you are afraid/angry after being bitten, you must back off for a while to make sure not worsen the situation :) Even more important is knowing his bodylanguage/situations biting is most likely and AVOID this. Molting and mature age can trigger alot of biting activity, but it's your job to handle this right or you will have the problem all the time.
