Posted by cathy --Previous Message-- He was scared to death and wouldn't come out of the cage at all. Never liked any hands of fingers any where near him. It took me about 5 months before he would come out of his cage, he was interested in us but didn't want us to touch him. I would read next to his cage and feed him peanuts throught the bars, we did this for quite some time. Then he would start to slide down the sides of the cage to see what I was doing, when he did this I would give him a peanut. Then we worked on step up, but it was done with a long perch, and he would get on it, I would take him out just for a minute and put him back in because of his body language he was telling me he wasn't comfortable but I would reward him with a peanut. Now, he is my buddy, it has been nine months and he is now saying words and hangs out on my shoulder. Takes showers with me and we really enjoy each other..... It will take time but read him body language and give him lots of time and patiences.....He'll come around. It sounds like he is interested in you, so keep trying don't give up...It will work out just fine. He needs a forever home. take care and good luck, cathy

Hi Angie,
I too adopted a red lored amazon which also was untamed, but it took a lot of time and lots of patiences!!!!!
Well, I got in patient and tried getting him out and he screamed and was terrified, so I decided it was not the best thing to do, but with me sitting by his cage everyday for small periods of time and reading to him and talking to him, ; he eventually felt comfortable enough to come out of his cage and climb around on the outside of the cage.
