Congratulations :) Not out for three years???!! :( Good thing you have it, well the first two weeks he should actually be in his cage getting know you and the sourroundings. Talk with him trhough bars of cage and offer some snack give praise. Since he have been in the cage for so long he might not want to get out or be very eager to get first been gived the oppurtunity, the easy way is if he wants out. If, not make sure he is not forced out of caged, coming to you at free will. AND make him a tree inside with some toys, a climbing tree, a good gift and freedom for this bird :) Make sure you use natural tree not near car traffic etc. and a sort of tree no toxic to the bird. You will MOST LIKELY encounter him biting now and then, be sure not to react on this if it happens the clue is avoiding it in the first place by finding something he can get a treat and praise for, rather than yelling. Read more post down to under stand more of this. Wish you best of luck, the auropalliata is a VERY fine bird ;)

: : Hi Darrin
: Firstly congrats on adopting
: such a wonderful bird,,, i have 2
: amazons caged together and they r
: very cage aggressive,,,,it must be
: an amazon trait...... they do need a
: lot of time,, but if you can get him
: into a routine where he knows your
: out for the day,, and he has toys to
: amuse himself... then when u come
: home u let him out of cage,he will
: get used to this routine,, just
: telling my birds im going shopping i
: will be home soon seems to work,,,
: they seem to understand......get him
: into a routine and he should be
: fine.. when he knows hes gonna get
: scratched and the attention he
: requiers when u get home should work
: enough,,,,,,also,, remember if he
: aint been allowed out of his cage
: for the last 3 years this new
: freedom is gonna be a gr8 change to
: him,,, just let him get used to it,,
: then he mite not be so cage
: aggressive,,, good luck

: I recently was fortunate enough to
: adopt a rescue Double Yellow-Headed
: Amazon. Overall he seems to be a
: great bird. He is very quiet, never
: screams or yells. He just started
: talking, about 30 minutes ago he
: started saying "hello,"
: "hi," and "how are
: you." He is, however, very cage
: agressive, but once he is off his
: cage, he seems to like being held
: and sctrached.
:
: My question is simply I want to make
: sure that he is happy and
: comfortable, regardless if that is
: with me or someone else. My
: agreement with the resuce person is
: that he is basically on permanent
: loan to me.
:
: I have read a lot about the
: enourmous amount of time Amazon's
: require to remain well-adjusted. As
: I do work, the bird is by alone
: during the work day. As he seems to
: be, for most part, a solitary
: creature, it seems to be working. I
: have, however, only had him for
: about eight days.
:
: All I know of his past is that he
: had not been out of his cage for
: about three years until very
: recently.
:
: Any advice or guidance would be
: greatly appreciated.
:
: Thanks.
