I've used several different materials, but the ones easiest to come by are found at Joann's craft stores, in the yardage department (this plastic item is used to make quilt pattern peices). They come in a 12" x 18" size, in two different thicknesses.
I used a hot stencil knife, #11 blade,(from walnut Hollow crafts)to cut my stencils.
