OK, here's my new advice. Find the Super8 Motel on Van Buren Street in Phoenix. Buy your tickets on hotels.com so that they are cheap. And take the hotel shuttle directly to the hotel.
Yes, the neighborhood is not ideal. Being mugged is a possibility but not a likelihood. If you take the shuttle there there won't be any danger at all.
And expect to step into a furnace in Phoenix. Unless you've spent quality time in the Sahara, you might have a hard time imagining how hot it will be in Phoenix in June. Even the nights are hot.
