Making a career of it?

Anyone know how long you can volunteer for? I read somewhere that people have done it for a year or something. Just wondering offhand..

i'm 23, single and no huge bills to pay that i couldn't do a year or two of it. Just wondering, if you enjoy it enough, if there are career opportunities in it, or anything like that.
