Hi Dan,
I'm glad you asked. We wouldn't want you to be surprised when you arrive to find that your bedroom door has a timed lock, meaning that you must be in the room by 10 PM each night on your off days or else an alarm will sound in my office and the tracking chip inserted into your neck on the first day of ACE will automatically send GPS coordinates to the receiver I have stitched onto my forearm.
I'm guessing you're a Brit so I figure you can appreciate a bit of sarcasm. Seriously, you're competely on your own on your off days. Many rent cars and travel to cities like LA (not recommended), San Diego (highly recommended), and San Francisco (highly recommended). Others travel to different National Parks like Yosemite and King's Canyon, go to see sports in the Bay area, explore the Big Sur Coast, climb mountains in the Sierra Nevadas, rent kayaks to explore Lake Tahoe (most recommended summer time destination for off days in CA), rent mountain bikes, rock climb, etc. Our only rules on off days are to keep the house clean (a constant challenge), never even think of drinking alcohol in the house, respect the rights of your housemates and neighbors to sleep, and be back in time for your next project.
take care,
-chris
