Sebastian I will put my 2 cents worth in here even though Andy knows way more about this than I.
Whenever I have raised a pup alone and without an adult dog, they always begin to guard at at later age than when I raise a pup with adult dogs. Gus began to mimic the Boxers when he was 4 months old. He would follow them and bark and raise a general alarm along with them; the pack set the example for him.
In my case this never happens with a pup I am raising without an adult pack; they are always older when they begin to guard.
I must say however that even when raised alone they eventually begin to exhibit guarding behavior before they are a year old--Bruno will get there!
