I turn the key a certain way to start the damn thing, I put it in proper gear to get it going, etc. Subjectively, I proceed with the understanding that it's important to avoid colliding with pedestrians and other cars, and that if I drive off a cliff, the universe will notice and care. A lot of dystopic sci-fi scenarios feature a machine(s) of sorts that get subjective upon our sorry arses. NO U-TURNS! Posted by Lian Dao on 5/17/2008, 3:15 pm, in reply to "Re: NO ENTRY!" 149.254.201.X It seems that, from what i gather from what you say, that there is a 'right' objective way to start a cars engine, select 'correct' transmission, etc etc as much as there is a 'good' subjective way to drive ie not crash and have to claim from extortionate insurance cover, not run some poor bleeder over and get arrested for it etc etc. Then of course before all of that malarchy we have to learn to drive 'correctly' from a qualified teacher. i mean instructor :-s  Post a Response

You weren't born knowing how to drive a car or tie your shoelaces. For that, you needed manuals and masters. You were, however, born with everything you need to know about being Lian Dao. Those instructions came hardcoded in the merchandise. You may choose to pretend that there's something to learn about being Lian Dao, and that the masters 'know' better than you on that account. To drag out my loosely disguised analogy, there are some instructors who are more interested in our money than in teaching us to to drive. And there are of course some who aren't even instructors.
