It's in my self-interest to have you (generically speaking) as a friend rather than as an enemy. The more allies I have, the safer I am and the longer I'll probably live.
This isn't "selfishness" on my part, imo. It's the way of nature. This is why animal species other than humans kill only to eat or to protect themselves from real or perceived danger.
It's in their -- and our -- self-interest not to accrue unnecessary enemies.
