I still remember what Father Jack said years and years and years ago! for homily about sin:
the term is from archery. it just means 'missing the mark' (having poor aim). doesn't really say anything about our ethical or moral worth as a human being...just that we need to improve our aim the next time we practice. or pick a better day to practice (the wind will blow any arrow off the mark...or if we're lucky, on the mark!)
i like the idea that spiritual endeavors are 'practice'. means there's always something to learn. not to be good, but just for the new experience.
could go on and on on this subject...
