: Interesting to see the shift of meaning in
: both versions...
: 1 rou2 柔 has the meaning of something of
: more value... rou2 柔 of being superior to
: 堅 jian1
: 2 rou2 柔 has the meaning of something of
: equal value in comparison to 堅 jian1...
: both have their time ...
: what is the body without the qualities of
: the belly and without the qualities of the
: spine... ?
:
: the pictures give good informations:
: 柔 a spear + tree - yielding, soft;
: supple, gentle
: 堅 a eye + a hand + earth - hard, solid;
: firm; strong, resolute
: the english translations reflect only a
: part...

ren ying,
Neither pole of a polarity stands alone.
Only the Tao is without a separate pole.
All taos have taos.
The Tao has all taos.
All taos mutually arise with their opposite non-opposite pole.
There is a time for each pole as the Tao swings back and forth from yin to yang to yin.
The only time when there is no movement between yin and yang is when the direction is changing. Only in stillness does motion arise.
Work. Rest. Work. Rest. Work. Rest. Work...
Chop wood, sit by the fire. The time between is play time. It is all playtime seen from different perspectives.
It would seem that sitting by a fire is as close to the Tao as one can come for yin comes first. The One comes before the Many. Like the Fore of a ship that is forward of its Aft.
And yet yin and yang only appear to be separate. Such is the nature of linear thinking. Of dualistic thinking.
The nondual perspective sees the whole ship, its Fore and Aft. Its Port and Starboard. For the ship of existence is a unity. Whole. No 'thing' stands by itself for no 'thing' is excluded from the thing that is not a thing.
Existence is not all just one gelatinous glob. A monism. It is a manifold organism. A unitive one.
The sage points to the Swing of the phases of the Moon as evidence of the underlying unity of existence. Everything is like the Moon in its perceived comings and goings. Even when it is not there it still is.
