: But, how does true self present itself to
: us, if not in consciousness. Who is without
: consciousness?

: Oh, gar, even the word consciousness has
: different connotations in cross traditions,
: and I might argue true self doesn't
: "present itself to us" at all, but
: that would be meaningless, too.
:
: We're trying to put verbiage onto
: experience, and it doesn't work well. I'll
: settle for, not willing to define
: consciousness, the use of awareness.
: Awareness just is. I use the words true self
: to represent what remains when the
: superfluous accretions of thought/memory are
: removed from awareness.
:
: But trying to rework concepts into new
: concepts or better concepts is still stuck
: in reification, which is entirely
: counter-productive in learning the essence
: of mind in reality. It just is a waste of
: time. We try, in order to communicate, but
: frankly, the more words are used, the more
: reality spirals away and becomes mentation.
:
: Experience matters. (imo) We can speak of
: that as clearly as words will serve (not
: much), that's it.
: I seriously doubt Freud and Lao Tzu would
: have any patience or interest in each other,
: or be able to find any common ground to
: communicate.

I think Freud and Laozi would both agree on the pleasure principle. We all do what brings us satisfaction. Whether it is stealing money from a bank or giving up our life to save another person's.
