mu,
I don't think Alan Watts was a phony. I think he was a genuine drunk which probably led to his death at the relatively early age of 58.
And yet I consider him to be one of the great sages of the 20th Century. Watts was an existential Marco Polo that brought treasures greater than gold from the East to the West. My sages don't have to be perfect. Watts wasn't a saint. As he matured he left the conservatism of the Anglican tradition and became instead an advocate of social rather than personal ethics. He was complex, but he was not a hypocrite. Another of my fav's is OSHO. I guess I like rebels with a cause.
I like my sages to be human.
As far as those that jump a person for quoting someone I will say that just about anyone can be a critic. Admittedly some criticism may be called for. But it is generally easier to tear down than to build up. Also sometimes I think it is a matter of the accuser either not understanding the relevance of a particular quote or in some cases simple pettiness. Sometimes the accuser never quotes anyone him or herself because they are in fact not very well read and so nobody should quote anybody. Dumbing down.
I once found myself at a forum where every time I quoted someone another poster, several other posters, would immediately attack me as though I was the Devil himself. One day I just deleted everything I had said and never went back. There are a lot of trolls running around haunting the Internet. It is one thing to have lively debate, quite another to simply want to mess with other people's heads.
One last thing. We are all guilty of being trolls from time to time. Maybe we should have some patience with others if we want them to have any with us. Live and learn.
I guess a quote is in order:
"The moment you free your love from limitations you are free." OSHO.
