Wayne,
I disagree. In my opinion everyone that points at the moon of actuality can only do it in their own way. In the way of their own understanding. In the way of their own insight. In the way of their own cultural milieu. In the way of their own direct experience filtered through their social conventions.
One way to actually see the moon is to look through a pair of binoculars. Suddenly an abstraction becomes a reality. Technology is not inherently problematic. It is our lack of wisdom that is.
The reason the sage or the mystic points at the moon is to try and help others see the moon as it is and not as we think it is. The mystic starts where we are, in our conditioned minds, and shows us "a" way back to our original state of being so that we can see again as if for the first time. As if awakened from a dream. Awakened from symbolic reality to actuality. Beginner's Mind. The mystic uses reason, reason does not use the mystic. Reason left to its own devices--the dominant mindset of our world, can only build a Tower of Babel. I give you the U.N. The unUnited Nations. The unUnited States. Polarization.
