Yes, it's common to talk in extremes. Human communication is such that subtlety often does not convey.
Sometimes it does. Often it does not. Our ears--always perfectly attuned--hear what they need to hear.
I still don't understand the link between 'compromise' and 'underlying unity,' Butcho.
Perhaps you'd care to elaborate.
