Hi PuddinHead
Almost every chapter is telling us that the conventional ways we look at the world--good vrs bad; friend vrs enemy; gain vrs loss-- entail a severe restriction of consciousness/possibility. We are emotionally invested in these ways of looking, and this emotional behavior is anchored in the neurology of the brain.
Chapter one:
Continually rid yourself of intentionality in order to observe its secrets.
This non-intentionality is half of Zhuangzi's double walk, on this half of the walk we get rid of our assumptions/plans/intentions/perspectives and thereby collaborate with the creativity of the dao. When all that stuff has been sufficiently cleaned out (xu = empty) the psycho-neurology is transformed (hua)spontaneously (zi hua) (this subsequent spontaneous change is the so-called "nothing to do")(wu wei)
The ego hates losing the world it has imagined, and so this transformation is painful, to change a body is painful. Change the body and embody the dao.
Email me if you want a list of suggested reading. Or just keep asking questions here so that I can stay at the top of Steve's list.
love,
rat

: Thank you for your response rat. What chapters
: of the DDJ/TTC do you feel best embody this
: perspective ?

: Hi PuddinHead
:
: I have not had time to read the thread so
: I don't know if you have considered the
: following:
:
: There is nothing to do but learn how to
: emotionally and neurologically embody (
: tidao 體 道 ) the dynamic that allows you
: to realize there is nothing to do.
:
: That way you will not be merely parroting
: words, you will have directly experienced
: their ever increasing ramifications.

: I appreciate your honesty. If my friend
: feels
: that nothing needs to be done, and I stated
: that I read something completely different,
: it stands to reason that I pretty much agree
: with you. I was hoping perhaps you saw the
: same things I did and could help me express
: my views better or, maybe I just wanted
: someone far more experienced than I to see
: how they expressed themselves on the
: subject.

: Why not Bao Pu,
: Do you just not care enough to share them
: with me, or are you feeling lazy ? Perhaps
: you are worried that if you share your
: thoughts others with differing views will
: attack you ? What do you think about Chapter
: 67 ?
:
: I'm lazy. I feel guilty that I'm spending
: the day on a discussion forum rather than
: other things which should have priority.
:
: I'm also unsure of your sincerity. You say
: you get something completely different from
: the DDJ than your friend, but haven't said
: what that is.
:
: 67
: The whole world agrees in saying that my Way
: is great but appears unworthy.
: It is only because it is great that it
: appears to be unworthy.
: If it appeared worthy, it would have become
: small long ago.
: Isn't that so!
: I have three treasures that I hold on to and
: preserve:
: The first I call loving kindness;
: The second I call frugality;
: The third I call never daring to put oneself
: first in the world.
: The kind can be courageous;
: The frugal can be generous;
: Those who never dare to put themselves first
: in the world can become leaders of the
: various officials.
: Now to be courageous without loving
: kindness,
: To be generous without frugality,
: To put oneself first without putting oneself
: behind others,
: These will lead to death.
: If one has loving kindness, in attack one
: will be victorious,
: In defense one will be secure.
: For Heaven will save you and protect you
: with loving kindness.
:
: -- Like I said before, here are some tips on
: how to be successful and avoid early death.
: The author also suggests some virtues that
: he values and thinks are worth our while to
: practice.
:
: health and happiness,
: Bao Pu
