I asked you what you get from reading Laozi because it's nice to know how other people see the writings. Also, if you want arguments to throw back at your friend about his opinions, then it would help to know what point of view you're coming from. I'm sorry if that seemed aloof.
As to Jemimy's answer.......
One of the legends about Laozi and how he came to write the DDJ is that he was trying to leave China and ride west on an ox because he was so disgusted with the state of affairs in China. The gatekeeper told him he wouldn't let him leave until he'd written down all of his philosophy.
To answer your question......
I think the writings in the DDJ were put down on paper because people thought they included some valuable messages. Why is anything written down?
Is there any reason to argue about what that "message" really is? As long as each of us get delight from our own interpretations, why would you want to say someone else is wrong?
