: I cannot 'will' introspection, just as I
: cannot 'will' awareness.
Steve, you say you cannot will (intend) introspection, but you may be unique in this: others can and do. Have you never looked within to understand why a situation has you angry, or sad, or unsettled, or why you said what you did, to understand the why of your feelings or your choices? This is introspection.
You say you cannot will or intend awareness, but again you must surely be unique: others can and do. Ask any student who's admonished "Pay Attention!" ...and does. Have you never become aware that you aren't giving attention to someone in pain and willed to yourself to listen more closely, be more present for him?
In ordinary life, there are so many instances when one wills (intends) oneself to look within, or to pay attention (be aware). These are normal human experiences. In the traditions of meditation and cultivation these activities are not bizarre or other-worldly, only the same activities taken with greater intention to a deeper and more precise level.
