Well, the laws aren't always fair, Steve.
Sometimes we can find ways to get around them.
You can lie. Hehe. When my ex-partner was in the hospital, I said I was his wife. No one asked for a marriage certificate. I realize that wouldn't work for same-sex couples. Say you're his brother. Will they ask for a birth certificate? Or, you could each fill out "Power of Attorney for Health" forms.
