There may indeed be a better way of addressing the problem. I understand what you're saying, Nina.
Within the gay community there's a lot of debate regarding strategies for securing equality in this area. I and most gay people I know don't advocate for the end of marriage as a civil or religious institution. That's a losing strategy, big time.
Civil unions don't provide all the benefits and protections to gay couples and their children that marriage does. This is well-documented. New Jersey, which has civil unions for same-sex couples, is a case in point. Anyone interested can google 'civil unions in New Jersey' to learn more on this.
