: I still don't get why anyone would want to
: marry anyone else. Heterosexual /
: homosexual. It's so archaic.
:
: I see people walking around with those rings
: on their fingers. What does that mean?
: -- I've found someone who thinks enough of
: me to pledge their lives to me?
:
: I mean, what's the point? So
: "God" gives his blessings to the
: union? So you're assured of getting alimony
: if something goes wrong? So your mate won't
: have a wandering eye?
:
: If you love someone, then who needs God or
: the government to "approve" of it?
:
: Is there a ballot measure coming up to
: abolish marriage? I wonder what would
: happen if there was no marriages?

In a sense I agree with you, Nina. As Joni Mitchell said, "We don't need no piece of paper from the city hall, keeping us tied and true."
Society grants benefits and protections to married couples and their children, so gay couples (many of whom have children) want the same benefits and protections for themselves and their children. It's really that simple.
There is civil marriage and there is religious marriage. Religious institutions should be free to marry--or not marry--anyone they choose to marry or not marry.
Civil institutions shouldn't discriminate. It's not nice.
I don't think that in our lifetimes the institution of marriage will be abolished. What would become of all the catering halls? And all those deejays-for-hire? It just won't happen.
So for the time being, we need to treat people equally and let them be. In a civilized society, that's what we do.
