: Dear Bao Pu,
:
: I'm going to blame on a board member here.
: lol
:
: About two or three weeks ago, I asked
: someone here (either Steve or Butch, I
: think) which were their favorite
: translations of the DDJ, and Richard Alan
: Dale was one of those translators.
:
: So, I bought Dale's translation from
: Amazon.com, and it came yesterday.
:
: We've probably got 35 to 40 different DDJ
: translations now, but frankly, David
: Hinton's is my very favorite.
:
: I might call him 'a shamanic poet',
: Professor Hinton might not like that
: descriptor though...I'm not sure.
:
: But I DO love his 'Tao Te Ching'.
:
: Peace, gossamer

: Hi Gossamer,
:
: I too believe he has mistranslated it. Why
: did you buy his translation?

Gossamer,
I am the one that recommended Ralph Alan Dale's translation of the Tao Te Ching. I will not apologize. I think it is great. The good Doctor brings the holistic approach of one that has studied acupuncture for over thirty years and written numerous books on Chinese medicine to his translation. His book is in my opinion one of the finest 21st Century translations of the TTC out there... One reason I suppose there are so many translations is that though we are all the same we are all different.
Bao Pu is a snob. But he is a nice snob. I am a bastard. But I am a bastard.
Bastard or no bastard both "Spirit of Life" and "Valley Spirit" resonate with me. Life is life no matter where one finds it.
"On the first part of the journey
I was looking at all the life
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz
And the sky with no clouds
The heat was hot and the ground was dry
But the air was full of sound
I've been to the desert on a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la...
After two days in the desert sun
My skin began to turn red
After three days in the desert fun
I was looking at a river bed
And the story it told
Of a river that flowed
Made me sad to think it was dead
chorus
After nine days I let the horse run free
cause the desert had turned to sea
There were plants and birds and rocks and things
There was sand and hills and rings
The ocean is a desert with its life underground
And a perfect disguise above
Under the cities lies a heart made of ground
But the humans will give no love
You see I've been to the desert
On a horse with no name
It felt good to be out of the rain
In the desert you can remember your name
cause there aint no one for to give you no pain
La, la ...." America.
