I must confess that i saw that in a movie. Perhaps i read it in a book also. But now that i think about it, it's probably a mis-translation.
Mao was probably quoting Marx - "Religion is the opium of the masses." Opium is a drug, "du" in Chinese. Chinese newspapers generally use the word "du" to write about opium, rather than "yapian," the transliteration. "Du" also means "poison." So if Mao says that "religion is a drug," he can also be translated as saying "religion is poison."
