Hi Steve, I think it is likely to be the case that whatever (idea, practice, etc) interferes with your optimal happiness (we can't seem to be happy all the time) is a waste of time.
But I could be wrong, maybe if we do things we hate (Like Lady Li in ZZ chapter one) we end up much happier. In fact, it might be good that we never know what the hell might make us happier.
There is a line in ZZ that says in reply to a similar question--- "Then what is the Dao good for?!"
