    Re: I don't understand

I think you answered it already:

“...wanted a daughter that she could treat as a doll.... “

Dinky - implies cute, like something you put on a shelf, like a little porcelain cat - and you can look at ‘it’, nudge it around with your finger and say- ‘Oh, isn’t that just cute, isn’t it just dinky?’

I believe there was even a range of toys called ‘dinky’

Winona’s character is called Dinky as a metaphor for being judged superficially (which, of course happens all the time, to everyone, whether they are are aware of/like it or not):

Dinky - she’s a serious lass, with big ideas, but she’s in this little body, saddled with a name that suggests things that are not 'her'. Because her ideas and attitudes don’t match what people expect, she gets called ‘weird’ (which she is, and more power to her..heh, heh)

The fact that the chosen name can't easily be shortened (that there is no nic-name for her) is convenient to the story, because it demonstrates the lack of non threatening intimacy in Dinky's life.

That’s my theory. Although, of course, I’m just a dog.

And now, I think I’ll go pee on a tree.
