"heathers 2","Beetlejuice 2" and Other Things

Asked an old friend your questions about sequels and they wrote and told me not to hold my breath for either. They think "Heathers 2" is just a method for Team Ryder to keep control of the francise and discourage somebody from running off with the name. It happens more then you'd think. Golem-Globus, those dudes that made all the Bronson/Norris drive-in epics of the '80's made a goldmine from such sequels. My personal favorite in terms of genius was the Italians who made 'Corleone', a "Godfather" knock-off that used the public-domian name. With production notices and such, it sends a not too subtle message to poachers that flesh eating attorneys could be close at hand.
"Beetlejuice" is a little more complicated. First off, a disclaimer...this is only second hand stuff...I was NOT PRESENT for it. ( I hate baseless rumours passed off by yettas as much as you do so I fess up right away when I don't know for sure.) But it is a nice reflection of Ms. Ryder so I pass it on.
Apparently Ms. Ryder had reservations regarding the animated series spin-off back in the late '80's. Nothing severe. Nothing like Robin Williams beef with Disney. She was financially treated okay. It was the fact they were using her caricatue that got her...sort of like when they draw you at the county fair and you say to yourself...'Is that really me???'
But automony means a lot to this lady and there was always this feeling of loss of control over something that was...after all...HER. I was lead to believe the big beef was putting a character in one of the cartoons that looked A LOT like a certain actor that she almost married...it didn't help he was a gloomy gus in the cartoon.
Again, nothing severe. It just rubbed her the wrong way, according to this person, that a friend of hers was stuck in the cartoon with her. Being a cartoon herself she could almost live with...friends went over the line. She never raised a stink, and she kept her mouth shut like the trooper she is, but from what I heard, it still irked.
The story I heard ends happily with either Ms. Ryder framing a couple of cels from the show and keeping them up to remind her of the WEIRDNESS of fame, or giving away a lot of 'Beetlejuice' toys to any kids she liked who wanted one.
The bottom line was that it would take more then a dumptruck of money to get her to be Lydia again. It would take a couple of dumptrucks and a little smoothing of feathers.
All unsupported of course. But I figure loyalty to friends and kindness should be mentioned.
