    Winona & Saks/My Views & Opinion

Posted by hottgrgirl on July 12, 2002, 12:53 pm

Things seem to be so twisted about this incident. I know with the media we are only hearing bits and pieces of the story...I'm not saying Winona is innocent or guilty but this is my view of the situation.

1-Winona knows that being in the public eye that people are going to recognize her as a celebrity and watch every move she makes. I can't see her in that situation trying to shoplift when she knows she's being watched by every customer and sales associate in the store.
2-If she really did steal everything that Saks says she did, her and her attorney both know that she's caught red handed and has no case. So, why would she plea innocent to something she possibly can't win? No attorney in their right mind would take on a case like that they know they are going to lose. Many attorneys eventually run for Judge and would not let a simple shoplifting case ruin their career. If she is obviously that guilty, then why wouldn't he convince her to plea guilty to a lesser charge so she would end up with just a small penalty like a fine, rehab, and/or community service -vs- 4 yrs in jail and ruin her career.
3-I'm sure we haven't heard everything about all the evidence presented in the case. From what we've all heard the video was hyped up to be nothing spectactular. Which we all know there is more to the case than just the video. The things I'm wondering is, where are the scissors that she supposidly used to remove the sensor tags? If she cut her hand with the scissors why didn't Saks Loss Prevention or the Police take pictures of her hands to prove there was a fresh laceration? If she vandalized the fitting room where are the pictures to prove so? If she really did pay for the merchandise, even though she didn't have the receipts on her at the time of her apprehension, her attorney or Saks Loss Prevention should be able to back-log the transactions made on her credit card and/or cash registers. Everyone knows you need that evidence to back up the case or else a Judge wouldn't waste his time dealing with nothing.

Things just sound really strange about this whole case. Why would Winona go to this extreme to jeopardize her career like this if she's guilty and go through all the highly publicized humiliation and embarrassment? Why not go through a quiet out of court settlement? If Saks is in the wrong, why would they go to this extreme and not drop the charges against her? This also makes them look extremely bad being an upscale department store and jeopardize getting sued big time in a civil case by a well known Hollywood Actress?

Your views and opinions are welcome. I am no way affiliated with the legal system and these are just my views looking at it from both sides. I know this is Hollywood, it's just too bad the legal system can't get their "ACT" together and get on with the show!
